When the latest version of Google Maps did not include the latitude location service, it was quite evident what was coming.

Google unveiled the new Google Maps for Android yesterday. It later announced that it would be coming to iOS “soon”.

Latitude is a location service that allows users to see where their friends are if they also use the service.

Google announced that it would be closing the service in an email to its users. Latitude will be shut on August 9th according to the email. Friends lists will also be deleted.

The company recently added location sharing to Google+ for Android. The feature will be coming the iOS version soon, the company has said.

Google released Latitude as a standalone app for iOS in December 2010. It received its last update a year later.
