Corning today announced that the Chinese smartphone maker, Oppo will be the first smartphone company to adapt their later iteration the Gorilla Glass lineup. Oppo will be soon launching a new smartphone with Corning Gorilla Glass 6. The smartphone will be launched in the coming weeks, added the company.

The Corning Gorilla Glass 6 was unveiled last month with an improved damage resistance over Gorilla Glass 5. Research shows that consumers drop their smartphone on average seven times per year. To improve cover glass performance, Corning scientists developed and engineered an entirely new material to address the challenge of multiple drops. On average, in lab tests, Gorilla Glass 6 survived 15 drops from 1 meter onto rough surfaces. Under the same test conditions, competitive glass compositions, such as soda lime and aluminosilicate, did not survive the first drop.Corning-Gorilla-GlassToday, Corning Gorilla Glass has been designed into more than 6 billion devices by more than 45 major brands. Gorilla Glass 6 is the latest example of Corning’s continued commitment to innovation – using its core understanding of materials science and process-development expertise to create life-changing products and extend Corning’s market leadership in mobile consumer electronics. Corning also said that  OPPO was also one of the leading adopters of Gorilla Glass 5, using the cover glass across a broad range of its smartphone portfolio, including the recently launched OPPO Find X and R15 models.

A recent worldwide study revealed that, on average, people drop their phones seven times a year, with more than 50 percent of the drops occurring at 1 meter or below. To improve cover glass performance, Corning has developed and engineered an entirely new material to address the challenge of multiple drops. On average, in lab tests, Gorilla Glass 6 survived 15 drops from 1 meter onto rough surfaces and is up to two times better than Gorilla Glass 5. Under the same test conditions, competitive glass compositions, such as soda lime and aluminosilicate, did not survive the first drop.

“OPPO and Corning have always maintained a close working relationship, which has enabled a superior user experience for consumers through multiple versions of OPPO smartphones,” said Andy Wu, vice president, OPPO. “We are excited to be the first to adopt Gorilla Glass 6 on our upcoming smartphone, and we believe that consumers around the globe will enjoy an unprecedented experience.”
