Canon India announced the launch of it’s first ultralight portable scanner FORUMLA P-201 scanner along with the introduction of CaptureOnTouch, a mobile application for easy scanning on the go.  The scanner and application together will help consumers to effectively scan the documents in variety of file formats like PDF, JPEG and so forth. Users can further share the scans through e-mail or archive in other applications on a click.

Canon has established a distinct position in the document scanning market with innovative products coupled with best-in-class features. Canon has a market share of 25.1% with respect to unit shipment in High-Speed Document Imaging Scanner during the period H1 2013 (Jan-Jun 2013). Canon is ranked #1 in the Sheetfed category during the period H1 2013 (Jan-Jun 2013) as per IDC release.

Organisation is planning to secure a similar leadership for the new emerging portable scanning category. P-201 introduction in Indian market is a perfect fit in the growing consumer requirement for a cost-effective,compact scanner.
Canon is mainly targeting Two segments – Households which have enormous personal hard copy documents like marksheets, loan agreement, insurance policies & Sales representatives of insurance companies who digitize customer documents on-site. Besides this demand for mobile scanning is expected to rise for frequent travelers, SOHO’s, MSME/SMEs & doctors etc. Scanning anytime, anywhere of important documents with P-201 is just a plug away.

Speaking on this occasion Mr. Kazutada Kobayashi, President & CEO, Canon India Pvt Ltd, said,“Canon has always been at the forefront of bringing innovative products to customers. This is a path breaking offering to today’s consumer who wants everything a touch away. With the new scanner, we clearly want to establish innovation leadership in India.” he added.
Further elaborating on the announcement Dr. Alok Bharadwaj, Executive Vice President, Canon Indiasaid, “India is probably world’s largest analogue country where most of the important & critical information lies in files at homes, offices & godowns. While consumption of digital content is increasing manifolds with various smart devices, creation of content is still not within easy reach. Canon is redefining the market for scanners by launching a portable scanner for households. We expect to create a business of Rs. 15 crore in this segment of mobile scanning and targeting a total Digitization pie of Rs. 100 crore in 2014. This is 50% growth over 2013”.


Further Dr. Bharadwaj added, “There are 2 million selling agents for BFSI vertical. India will modernize the last mile sales transactions. The portable scanner will help in making this more efficient”.

The scanner will be available across India after 16th October, 2013 and will be sold on all Canon Image Square stores and retail outlets. Canon will be working with its enterprise sales team and channel partners to ensure deeper penetration of the scanner in smaller markets.


Scanner features:

P-201 is capable of scanning variety of document sizes and paper densities like plain paper, postcard and business card.  The scanner scans at a speed of 7.5 seconds per page with a 200 x 200 dpi result.  It has contact image sensor and supports simplex scanning side. The scanner weighs only 550 gms and consumes 2.5 W electricity when connected with cable.

The scanner is loaded with latest image processing options and is equipped with an Automatic Paper Size Detection. P-201 has auto color detection which intelligently determines whether to save the scan in Grayscale or Color, this eliminates the need to manually switch between mono & color modes.

Mobile app features:

Canon’s CaptureOnTouch Mobile is a free application for smartphones and tablets. It allows users to scan directly to iOS (iPad/iPhone) and Android devices via Wi-Fi network or direct plug-in with USB based tablets. Users can also share documents easily by email or by uploading to their favourite cloud-based applications. CaptureOnTouch is available on both Google Play and itunes starting today.

TUB Verdict: The scanner is priced at INR 11,995 and the compatible WiFi adapter is priced at a shocking price of INR 14,000 making it a total package of 25k+. That’s when you can simply use your smartphone’s camera to click a picture and mail it. And if you need to scan a lot of documents then you can buy a decent scanner for INR 3000-4000. So one thing is for sure that this product is not for the mass market, it’s only for a niche segment.
