Diwali in India is considered to be an auspicious time to purchase new goods. Be it new clothes, utensils, jewellery electronics or even cars, Diwali period is one where the wallets are let loose. Adding to the frenzy of the festive period have been several offers and sales that the E-Com portals have started offering. These lucrative offers make sure that the customers always have something or the other to pick up from their shopping carts even if the purchase was not intended. A few years ago, it would be maddening to think that there could be people willing to buy a phone worth Rs 40,000 or more, but that is no more the case as Rs 40,000 has pretty much become the base amount for the flagship smartphones today. So if you are in the market to pick up a flagship phone this Diwali then, these are the phones that you must be looking to pick out:

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

If the size of the smartphone is no holds barred, then the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is a fantastic device to pick up. The device comes with a gorgeous 5.7 inch AMOLED panel, giving it a PPI of 515. In terms of design, the phone is based on the design language of the Galaxy S6 and has a metallic build. There is a lot of firepower under the hood on the Note 5 as it comes with an Octacore Exynos 7420 SoC with 4 GB of RAM. The camera is a pretty great 16 MP sensor on the back and you also get the nifty S-Pen which you can use to quickly draw or jot down your points on the screen. The Note 5 comes with a 3,000 mAh battery and can easily last you a day on a normal usage which is extremely important. If you are not okay with the 32 GB of memory on the device, then the Note 5 comes with an expandable slot for MicroSD card.

iPhone 6s Plus

iPhone 6s Plus

The iPhone 6s Plus is the flagship device of the year 2015, no doubt about that. Every phone that would be released this year would be compared to the iPhone 6s and unfortunately for a lot of them the iPhone will come out triumphs, which is what makes them a member of our recommendations. However, we have picked up the iPhone 6s Plus over the iPhone 6s, simply because the battery life on the 6s Plus pretty much like that of the iPhone 6 Plus, which is noticeably bigger. If you want your iPhone to last at least a day, then we would recommend picking up the bigger iPhone 6s in the form of iPhone 6s Plus. You have the same goodness of Touch ID, 3D Touch, a magnificent 12 MP camera and a bigger display at 5.5 inches. Just like the iPhone 6s, the 6s Plus too comes in the much talked about Rose Gold color, along with the regular Space grey, Silver and Gold versions. Just a word of advice, do yourself a favour and pick up the 64 GB version of the device as 16 GB will never be sufficient for you given the support for 4K video capture and Live Photos. And just in case you wanted more incentive to pick up the iPhone 6s Plus over the iPhone 6s, it comes with Optical Image Stabilisation that ensures your videos look really steady when you shoot them with your phone.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium

If you love crystal clear display and just hate even the minutest sight of a pixel, then this diwali, get yourself the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. The device comes with a 5.5 inch 4K display which gives it a PPI of a whopping 806. The latest flagship from Sony comes with a finger print scanner on the right side of the device and brings the same glass and metal sandwich construction that we have seen with the previous generation of Xperia Z devices. Another major bump in the device as compared to the previously launched Xperia Z3+ is the new 23 MP camera as compared to the 20.7 MP rear camera unit. Priced approximately at the Rs 60,000 mark, the phone can be picked for slightly cheaper price from the offline stores. Sony has also solved the heating issues that it faced with the Xperia Z3+ on the Z5 and while both the phones feature Snapdragon 810 SoC, the one on the Z5 is better optimised and better in terms of performance. The phone comes in a variety of colors too, so if you like devices that echo your personality through colors, you definitely would like the Xperia Z5 Premium.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

If you liked what Samsung did with the Galaxy S6 Edge and want to take your game to the next level then the Galaxy S6 Edge+ is the phone for you. Our second Samsung manufactured product in the list here, but makes it on a good merit. The S6 Edge+ is basically the Note 5 with curved displays minus the S-Pen. This is one gorgeous smartphone. Though the USP of the phone is the curved display on both sides, we have not seen a lot of utility out of it yet from the developers. Not many apps have taken advantage of the added curved display yet, but there is hope that as the technology becomes more and more popular, more apps would be able to make use of it. The specifications of the Galaxy S6 Edge+ includes a 5.7 inch 2K display with Exynos 7420 SoC and 16 MP camera. If you do not require the S-Pen and are like the curved display, then the S6 Edge+ is the phone for you over the Note 5 that we have already recommended.

Nexus 6P

The premium one of the two new Nexus devices that were launched in the year 2015, the Nexus 6P is a successor to the whale-sized Motorola manufactured Nexus 6. The Nexus 6P is manufactured by Huawei and sells for Rs 39,999 in the Indian market for the 32 GB variant. While technically it is below the Rs 40,000 mark, we feel the Nexus 6P is more suitable to be included in this category. The 64 GB variant of the phone at Rs 42,999 is a great option to pick too, if you want a premium phone with all the latest specifications and Android at its Vanilla best. The Nexus 6P also brings a fingerprint scanner, called the Nexus Imprint which is crazy fast and looks the part along with the Touch ID as the best implementation of fingerprint scanners so far. In terms of specifications, the device comes with a glorious 5.7 inch Quad HD display, with Snapdragon 810 SoC under the hood, 3 GB of RAM and a really impressive 12 MP camera. Our only qualm with the device is the low repairability scores and the after sales performance of Huawei in case something goes wonky on the device. It is one of the better looking Nexus phones out there and without a doubt, the most affordable of all the phone in this category.

HTC One M9+ (Diwali Bonus)

We have always admired HTC for its build quality and innovations like the dot-matrix cover and the HTC One M9+ doesn’t disappoint. The device comes with a 5.2in LCD display with 1440×2560 resolution (565ppi). It’s powered by MediaTek Helio X10 coupled with 3GB RAM. HTC One M9+ is also the only flagship to come with a dual rear camera setup of 20MP + 2.1MP with dual tone flash and 4MP UltraPixel front camera. M9+ comes loaded with Android 5.0 Lollipop, paired with HTC’s Sense 7 UI. We may not say that for most of the UI Overlays, but the Sense 7 is a brilliant interface for those who love to customise the look and feel of their device. Even with the Fingerprint sensor enabled home button sits right in the middle of the bottom speaker, HTC still reigns supreme is with its front-facing BoomSound speakers, which are by far the best set of speakers to be equipped on a smartphone.

We hope, we have made your choice of picking up a smartphone in the category of Rs 40,000 and above a little simpler, do let us know your views and choices in the section below.
