This week in the world of tech we saw a new smartphone launch from Oppo and a new laptop from Asus’s VivoBook range. Also, there was some news from the companies like OnePlus, Huawei and others. Here is the list of things that happened in the world of tech this week.

OnePlus Partners with Qualcomm To provide 5G network in 2019

Qualcomm has announced that its Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem family has been selected by a number of global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) among them, the Chinese premium smartphone maker, OnePlus is also all set to provide 5G in 2019. OnePlus and Qualcomm are working to commercialize 5G mobile devices for the sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum bands starting in 2019 based on the first commercially announced 5G modem solution, the Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem family.

On the partnership, Pete Lau, Founder & CEO, OnePlus said that,
“OnePlus has been working closely with Qualcomm Technologies since our foundation. Together, we have enabled a slew of breakthrough technologies in each OnePlus smartphone generation,” said Pete Lau, founder and chief executive officer, OnePlus. “Facing the transition to 5G, OnePlus is pleased to continue our collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, utilizing our expertise to provide richer and superior mo bile experience to users across the world.”

Huawei rose to 25th spot on Brand Finance Global 500 2018

Brand Finance, the global authoritative consulting agency has released its ranking of the most valuable brands around the world in 2018. Huawei ranked 25th on Brand Finance Global 500 2018 with a value of 38.046 billion dollars, and its brand value increased by more than 50%. Previously, Huawei was at the 47th spot on Brand Finance Global 500 in 2016 and at 40th spot in 2017.

Shell and Oath to provide cleaner cooking for families in India

Oath has announced a global deal with Shell to take the energy brand’s “Make the Future” campaign into its next phase. The new phase brings the content of its “On Top of the World” music video to life through a crafted WebGL “Globe” activation, created by Oath’s RYOT Studio global solutions team in collaboration with UNIT9: allowing people to explore the five cleaner energy projects featured within the music video through its interactive design. The music video features five global artists and celebrates five cleaner energy solutions supported by Shell across four continents that are helping provide access to cleaner energy and support local communities.  The “Globe” brings those cleaner energy initiatives to life, allowing users to explore them by moving around the world and zooming in on each of the locations of the projects to find out more:

  • INSOLAR: providing solar energy access to low-income communities in Brazil
  • GRAVITYLIGHT: creating sustainable and cleaner light for families and children in Kenya
  • SHELL NATURAL GAS: providing cleaner cooking with natural gas, saving families invaluable time in India
  • SHELL PARTNERSHIP WITH GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR CLEAN COOKSTOVES: bringing clean cookstoves to families and creating healthier homes in China
  • SHELL HYDROGEN: creating additional cleaner transport choices for the future in the USA, Germany and the UK

Hotstar’s portfolio now available to Airtel customers

Airtel and Hotstar announced a strategic partnership to bring content from Hotstar’s portfolio to Airtel customers. With this new partnership, Airtel TV now has access to more digital content portfolios in India, with 350 plus LIVE TV channels and close to 10,000 popular movies and shows from India and abroad. Hotstar library comprising over 100,000 hours of content, in 9 languages comprising live sports and the best of Indian cinema and TV shows from channels across the Star network will now be available to all Airtel customers for free through the Airtel TV app.

All content on Airtel TV app is free for Airtel Prepaid and Postpaid customers on a promotional basis till June 2018. To get started, you can download the latest version of the Airtel TV app to enjoy the upgraded content.

Oppo A71 announced

Oppo A71Oppo A71 smartphone comes with a 5.2″ HD IPS display, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor clocked at 1.8Ghz, 3GB RAM and 16GB flash storage with MicroSD card support up to 128GB, also this device supports OTG. This device runs on Android 7.1 Nougat with Color OS 3.2 on top of it. Rear sports a 13MP Auto-Focus camera and a 5MP front camera with 1.4um pixels. A71 is packed with 2550mAh battery. The A71 is available in Gold and Black at a price of INR 9,990 on Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal from 10 Feb 2018.

Asus has announced a new VivoBook series laptop. The VivoBook S14 VivoBook S14 (S410UA) is powered by up to an 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, with up to 8GB DDR4 RAM for multitasking performance. The 8th Generation Intel Core processor provides 60% more processing power than the previous generation. VivoBook S14 also features up to a 256GB SATA M.2 SSD for superfast data access speeds.
