Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit 2018

At the ongoing Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit 2018 in Hong Kong, the company has made new several announcements which also includes a new mobile processor and Qualcomm has also they have also upgraded the existing technologies. Here are the all the highlights from the event.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 Mobile Platform

Firstly, the company announced a new SoC, Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 Mobile Platform that aims to offer outstanding gaming, a leap in artificial intelligence (AI) capability, and a cutting-edge camera. The Snapdragon 675 SoCs are enabled by the Qualcomm AI Engine, Qualcomm Spectra ISP, Qualcomm Kryo CPU, and Qualcomm Adreno 612 GPU. The SoC supports up to 8GB of RAM and Quick Charge 4+ technology.  Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit 2018Snapdragon Wear Platforms

The company has announced a series of ecosystem collaborations to expand the reach of its Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear family of wearable platforms. The company has announced that it is working with leading original design manufacturers (ODMs) and ecosystem players including Compal Electronics and Longcheer on smartwatches, Huaqin and Thundersoft on 4G kid watches, Franklin Wireless on 4G smart trackers, and Smartcom on 4G connected end-to-end solutions.

Qualcomm and Ericsson

Qualcomm and Ericsson announced the successful completion of a 3GPP Rel-15 spec compliant 5G NR(New Radio Access Technology) over-the-air (OTA) call over sub-6 GHz bands on a smartphone form factor mobile test device. The OTA call was conducted in the Ericsson Lab in Stockholm, Sweden on the 3.5 GHz band. Similar to the companies’ first OTA calls performed using millimeter wave (mmWave) in both 28 and 39 GHz spectrum bands, which occurred in September 2018, today’s sub-6 GHz call utilized Ericsson’s commercial 5G NR radio AIR 6488 and baseband products and a mobile test device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem and RF subsystem.

Qualcomm and GoPro Collaborate on HERO7 Silver and White CamerasQualcomm 4G/5G Summit 2018The recently announced GoPro HERO7 Silver and HERO7 White use the Qualcomm Vision Intelligence 200 and Vision Intelligence 100 Platforms, respectively and they are based on the Qualcomm APQ8053 system-on-chip (SoC), which features a heterogeneous architecture designed to deliver high compute capability and outstanding power efficiency. The SoC also features integrated location and connectivity which allows for seamless sharing of content wirelessly.

5G NR mmWave Antenna Modules

At the event, the company also announced the smallest additions to the Qualcomm QTM052 mmWave antenna module family of fully integrated 5G NR millimeter wave (mmWave) modules for smartphones and other mobile devices. 25% smaller than the first QTM052 mmWave antenna modules announced in July 2018, the latest mmWave antenna module is engineered to enable mobile device manufacturers to address stringent mobile handset size requirements for 5G NR smartphones and mobile devices expected to launch in 2019.

Quick Charge Mobile Devices, Accessories and Controllers

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge technology is now present on 1000 mobile devices, accessories and controllers, making it the most prevalent fast charging solution in the industry. The Quick Charge technology is a rapidly growing ecosystem consists of more than 200 compatible mobile devices, 700 accessories, and 100 controllers. For charging accessories, consumers have a variety of wall and car chargers, battery banks, USB hubs, and others to choose from, widely available at competitive prices.

Samsung and Qualcomm partners to Deliver 5G NR Small Cell Infrastructure

Furthermore, Qualcomm and Samsung have tied up to develop 5G small cells for massive 5G network speed, capacity, coverage, and ultra-low latency. To effectively scale 5G NR networks, the industry is expected to increasingly rely on small cells as foundational building blocks. Given the propagation characteristics of higher frequencies in sub-6 and mmWave bands that will be used in 5G NR networks, small cell solutions are designed to support delivery of uniform 5G experiences, especially indoors where most data is consumed. In order to address cost and form factor requirements for a wide range of 5G NR deployment scenarios, service providers, enterprises, factories, and other stakeholders are expected to growingly depend on 5G NR small cell solutions, and on the suppliers able to deliver them. Mobile operators across the world including the United States, Japan, and Korea are all expected to deploy small cells as a catalyst to support 5G-class experiences.

Qualcomm QCC5100-series Bluetooth Audio SoC

Lastly, the company announced the industry’s first qualified end-to-end Bluetooth Smart Headset reference design featuring push-button activation support for Alexa for users of Android phones with the Alexa app. The SoC is based on QCC5100-series. In addition to supporting for Alexa, the solution also supports ultra-low power consumption for extended playback time and battery life, as well as Qualcomm cVc noise reduction technology designed for superior audio and voice service capabilities. Manufacturers can also add support for active noise cancellation and Qualcomm aptX HD high-resolution wireless audio.
