Moto E7 Power: The Unbiased Review – Democratizing USB Type-C for under 10K Smartphones

It’s been a busy year for the brands to cope up with the competition of India’s entry-level smartphones. With brands like Xiaomi and Realme filling up this space with their offerings. For keeping the price low of a budget-centric device, brands often collaborate with other app developers and fill it up with unwanted ads and ridiculous bloatware which affects the overall experience of the device and that’s where Moto comes to the rescue. Motorola’s latest, the Moto E7 Power offers a clean stock experience with no ads and no bloatware at a very competitive price.

It’s been a week since we’re using it as our primary device and here’s our review of Moto E7 Power. But, before heading towards the review, let’s have a quick look at the specifications of this device:

DESIGN & DISPLAY

With its every iteration, Moto follows the legacy of bringing elegant and straightforward design. And the Moto E7 Power carries on the legacy even though it comes with a basic design it still looks elegant. The back is made of polycarbonate material and comes with a matte finish that enhances the grip as well as prevents fingerprint smudges. It looks contesting as far as price is concerned.

Weighing in at 200grams, the Moto E7 Power isn’t the lightest smartphone you can get, but that massive battery puts the weight in perspective. The device feels sturdy for single-hand operations. Despite the fact it has a 5000 mAh battery, it feels quite compact according to that. The dual camera with a flash sits towards the top left side and you’ll spot the Moto logo branding embedded into the Fingerprint sensor.

The button layout appears different from the competition; with the power button, volume rockers, and Google assistant hotkeys are on the right and the SIM tray slot is on the left. The Fingerprint sensor is very quick to unlock the phone. The Type-C USB port and secondary microphone are at the bottom and the headphone jack on the top. It also comes with an IP52 rating which can handle accidental water spills on the device.

Over at the front is a 6.51-inch HD+ Max Vision WaterDrop notch display with slightly thick bezels and a thick chin. The indoor visibility is good enough. This display emits crisp and vibrant colours in indoor situations, enjoying binge content on Youtube and Netflix won’t be an issue. When it comes to outdoor situations, the display is too reflective under the sun and it struggles even with full brightness. Honestly, it would be unfair to expect a Full HD+ Display at this price bracket.

PERFORMANCE & SOFTWARE

Powered by the MediaTek Helio G25, a 12nm entry-level processor is comparable to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 450 processor. The performance of this device is alright for day-to-day usage, but this phone is not a powerhouse. In terms of RAM and ROM, you get up to 4 GB of RAM and up to 64 GB of storage in the top variant. E7 Power comes with a Hybrid SIM card slot that can be used to expand the memory with a help of a MicroSD card.

We played some games like Alto’s adventure and Asphalt 8 and the device did lag sometimes. But keeping that in mind, this device isn’t meant for heavy intensive tasks. This can make up your daily tasks and browse such as using Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Expecting a heavy performance at this price would be too much.

Software is a department where this device excels with ease. It comes with a Stock Android Experience on Android 10. With almost zero bloatware and no advertisements as you’d get in the devices in the price segment. This makes the software experience very clean and pleasant. There is only one preloaded app – Facebook, which can be uninstalled easily. But the lack of Moto Actions and Moto Styles is a missout feature for many.

CAMERA

Smartphones with multiple cameras have become a trend now, whereas Moto E7 Power isn’t following it and boarding two sensors into the smartphone. Over the back, it sports a 13 MP Primary shooter and 2 MP Macro Sensor.

Image quality varies and the details are visible but colours look washed out even when there is an adequate level of sunlight. The camera sensor struggles a bit in challenging lighting scenarios. At this price, it’s a common compromise but a few devices boast a better camera sensor. Meanwhile, the macro sensor has some focusing issues when we tried to reach the subject closure to click macro photos. So, maintaining a good distance between the subject is necessary for clicking macros.

The 5MP Selfie Camera on the front works fine if there is adequate light. But it struggles while maintaining the exposure level which blows the details off and makes the image grainy and overexposed when you try clicking against the light. That said, it has an acceptable front camera for your video calls and outdoor selfies. It can also shoot 1080p 30fps videos from both the front and rear camera.

BATTERY

The 5000mAh battery is huge and is paired with a not so power-hungry processor making it last for more than a day or even two with moderate usage. This device ships with a 10W charger, which means that 0-100% will be completed in 2 hours 12 minutes. It bundles a Type-C charging port which gives it a push ahead of its competitions like Poco C3, Realme C3, and Redmi 9i.

THE UNBIASED VERDICT

The Moto E7 Power comes in two colours, Motorola Blue and Orange and with two storage configurations, 2GB RAM and 32GB ROM at Rs. 7500 and 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM for Rs. 8,300.

There’s a lot to like about this device. At this price segment, it offers a big and good vibrant display, a huge battery, a processor which can take up day-to-day tasks, a clean stock user experience, and a USB Type-C slot which other brands lack to deliver in this segment. One thing that could have been better on this device has to be its cameras but other than that this device won’t disappoint you. The only reason not to pick this one can be the cameras.

If you’re looking for a smartphone with better cameras, You can opt for devices like Redmi 9i, Realme C3 with a 12MP dual rear camera, and Poco C3 comes with a triple camera setup.
