Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are down globally due to Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are down globally and for obvious reasons, users are flocking iMessage, Snapchat, Twitter and Telegram. And for the same reason, all these platform hashtags are trending on Twitter along with Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

The Facebook network is down including the Oculus VR platform. And the executives of all their platforms have tweeted “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

But now several hours have passed and still, the entire network is down. While some users claim it’s a global cyberattack but many experts have called it a DNS error due to which this outage has happened.

Like last week, Slack outage, this too is caused by DNS error. Cloudflare senior vice president Dane Knecht notes that Facebook’s border gateway protocol routes — BGP helps networks pick the best path to deliver internet traffic — have been “withdrawn from the internet.”

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the routing protocol for the Internet. Much like the post office processing mail, BGP picks the most efficient routes for delivering Internet traffic. So if you read any notion about this being a cyber attack is not at all the truth. We have seen it time and again, whenever there is a massive outage like this, a lot of people jump to conclusion that it has to be a cyberattack but that’s not the case usually.

There’s no official statement yet from Facebook about what is the real cause of the problem or when its network sites, including Messenger and WhatsApp, will be up and running again.
